A Shot In The Dark Espresso Blend 2024 - notes from the roaster:
As part of the coffee roasting competition, I was provided with two additional coffees to roast - a Colombian coffee and Ugandan Coffee (more details below). Together with the Rwanda Kigasali, entrants were instructed to create an espresso blend with all three coffees. I was provided with parameters as to how the coffee would be judged but how I was to blend the coffee was up to me!
So here is what I did. Each coffee was roasted to a medium-light roast to preserve the inherant quality of each. Once roasted, these coffees were evaluated to establish their inherant flavour characteristics through a process called "cupping".
After understanding the potetial of the coffee, I tried each coffee as an espresso on it's own to establish what the coffee tasted like through this brewing method. I then started experimenting with certain blend percentages for each coffee and settled on the following recipe:
40% Colombia Antioquia Bolivar Crecer (Washed)
40% Rwanda Kigasali (Washed)
20% Uganda Bulambuli (Washed)
Tasting notes: Orange Citrus, Stone Fruit, Dark Chocolate
